Matrix Operations

Basic Concepts

Matrix Addition and Subtraction

Matrices of the same dimensions can be added or subtracted element by element.

A + B = [aᵢⱼ + bᵢⱼ] A - B = [aᵢⱼ - bᵢⱼ]

Example: [1, 2] + [3, 4] = [4, 6] [5, 6] - [2, 1] = [3, 5]

Scalar Multiplication

A matrix can be multiplied by a scalar (a single number) by multiplying each element of the matrix by that scalar.

kA = [kaᵢⱼ]

Example: 2 * [1, 2] = [2, 4] [3, 4] [6, 8]

Matrix Multiplication

Two matrices can be multiplied if the number of columns in the first matrix equals the number of rows in the second matrix. The result is a matrix with the same number of rows as the first matrix and the same number of columns as the second matrix.

(A × B)ᵢⱼ = Σₖ aᵢₖbₖⱼ

Example: [1, 2] × [5, 6] = [(1×5 + 2×7), (1×6 + 2×8)] = [19, 22] [3, 4] [7, 8] [(3×5 + 4×7), (3×6 + 4×8)] [43, 50]

Properties of Matrix Operations

  1. Associativity: (A + B) + C = A + (B + C)
  2. Commutativity of Addition: A + B = B + A
  3. Non-commutativity of Multiplication: AB ≠ BA (in general)
  4. Distributivity: A(B + C) = AB + AC

Transpose of a Matrix

The transpose of a matrix A, denoted as Aᵀ, is obtained by interchanging its rows and columns.

Example: A = [1, 2] Aᵀ = [1, 3] [3, 4] [2, 4]

Properties:

  1. (Aᵀ)ᵀ = A
  2. (A + B)ᵀ = Aᵀ + Bᵀ

Identity Matrix

The identity matrix, denoted as I, is a square matrix with 1s on the main diagonal and 0s elsewhere. It has the property that AI = IA = A for any matrix A.

Example: I = [1, 0, 0] [0, 1, 0] [0, 0, 1]

Inverse of a Matrix

The inverse of a square matrix A, denoted as A⁻¹, is a matrix such that AA⁻¹ = A⁻¹A = I. Not all matrices have inverses; those that do are called invertible or non-singular.

Properties:

  1. (A⁻¹)⁻¹ = A
  2. (AB)⁻¹ = B⁻¹A⁻¹
  3. (Aᵀ)⁻¹ = (A⁻¹)ᵀ

Trace of a Matrix

The trace of a square matrix is the sum of the elements on its main diagonal.

tr(A) = Σᵢ aᵢᵢ

Properties:

  1. tr(A + B) = tr(A) + tr(B)
  2. tr(kA) = k tr(A)
  3. tr(AB) = tr(BA)
